Gold Price FAQs
Why is your price lower than the spot gold price?
Spot price is the trading price for pure refined bullion. Scrap and jewellery gold needs to be tested, refined, and processed before it reaches that purity, so buyers price per gram below spot to cover this. Our rate is checked daily against other UK gold buyers to stay competitive.
How is my gold's purity tested?
We use XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analysis, which identifies exact purity without damaging your item, then weigh it on calibrated precision scales.
Does the price change between when I request a kit and when I get paid?
Your offer is based on the live price at the time we test and value your item, not the price on the day you requested your kit. If gold prices move significantly, this could mean a small difference between the estimate and your final offer.
What's the difference between 9ct, 14ct, 18ct and 24ct gold?
The number refers to purity out of 24 parts. 24ct is pure gold; 9ct is 37.5% gold mixed with other metals for durability. Higher carat = more actual gold = higher value per gram, but also softer metal.
Is the calculator estimate exact?
It's a close estimate based on weight and purity at today's rate. Your final offer is confirmed after we test and weigh the item, since calculators can't account for stone settings, clasps, or mixed-metal items.
Why Our Price Is Below the Spot Price
You may see "spot price" quoted elsewhere and notice it's higher than what we pay per gram. This is completely normal and how every gold buyer operates, not just us. The spot price is a wholesale trading price for pure, refined gold bullion — it doesn't account for:
- Refining costs to convert scrap/jewellery gold into pure bullion
- Testing and assay costs
- Insurance and secure logistics
- Our margin, which we keep as low as possible via our Price Match Promise
We check competitor prices daily to make sure our per-gram rate stays competitive, and we'll match any genuine higher offer from an approved dealer.
We buy:
- Jewellery, in any condition
- Scrap and broken gold
- Coins and bullion
- Dental gold
Even small or damaged pieces are usually worth more than people expect — weight and purity matter, not appearance.
Example of what payout you could get
Say you send in a 9ct gold ring weighing 3g. At today's 9K rate of £32.91/g, that's a valuation of approximately £98.73, before any adjustment for extras like gemstones or clasps (which we value separately and add on top).
Say you send in an 18ct gold chain weighing 11g. At today's 18K rate of £65.82/g, that's a valuation of approximately £724.02, before any adjustment for extras like gemstones or clasps (which we value separately and add on top).
