What is 18ct gold?

18ct (also written 18k or 18 carat) gold is 75% pure gold mixed with 25% other metals such as silver, copper or palladium. Those metals make it harder wearing than pure gold and give it its colour. Yellow, white and rose 18ct gold all contain the same 75% gold, so we pay the same rate for each.

How do I know if my gold is 18ct?

Look for a hallmark, usually inside a ring band or on the clasp of a chain or bracelet. UK 18ct gold is stamped 750, meaning 750 parts gold per 1,000. You may also see "18ct", "18k" or "18KT", especially on pieces made abroad. If you can't find a mark, send it anyway: we test every item by XRF on arrival, so unmarked gold is valued at its true purity.

How we work out your offer

Your offer is the weight of each 18ct item multiplied by our 18ct rate per gram, shown at the top of this page. The rate follows the live gold market price, so it moves during the day. We weigh on calibrated scales, itemise your offer and pay the same working day you accept it. There are no fees for testing, payment or returns.

We pay for the gold only. Gemstones are not included in the offer and are not returned if you sell, so remove any stones you want to keep before sending.

18ct gold price FAQs

How much is 18ct gold worth per gram today?
The live figures are at the top of this page. The market value is 75% of the pure gold price per gram, and we pay 88% of that market value.

Is white gold worth less than yellow gold?
No. 18ct white gold has the same 75% gold content as 18ct yellow gold. Its white colour comes from the other metals and a thin rhodium plating, which don't reduce the gold value.

Do you buy broken 18ct jewellery?
Yes. Broken chains, single earrings and damaged rings are all valued on their gold content, the same as items in perfect condition.

What is the difference between 18ct and 9ct gold?
9ct gold is 37.5% gold, so it is worth half as much per gram as 18ct. See our gold purity guide for every carat.

How do I sell my 18ct gold?
Order a free insured postal kit, post your items back in the prepaid Royal Mail Special Delivery envelope, and we'll test them and send your offer the day they arrive. Read how to sell gold by post for the full steps.
